You do not have to make a special trip to enjoy the National Forest. 2. Slow Down, But Stay Connected

Greene County offers an incredible balance of lifestyle. Things move at a more reasonable pace than in larger cities, but we’re wired up with 5G and fiber, an hour-ish drive to trio of regional airports, and within a day’s drive of over half the population of the United States. Hop in the car and you’re on I-81, I-40, I-26, or I-75 in short order; and you’ll find New York, Chicago, Orlando, and New Orleans all about a ten hour drive.

Of course, its so nice here in the neighborhood you might not choose to leave often! Greeneville has restaurants, shops, medical offices, schools, banks, grocery stores, hardware stores, and everyday services. What would take a full day of being stuck in traffic to run errands in Atlanta you can do in an hour here.

For some local adventure, drive over a gravel mountain road with dramatic views to grab lunch in Hot Springs, visit the galleries and breweries of Asheville, or take in some theater or live music in Knoxville. Johnson City is even closer with a plethora of shopping and dining options.

Greene County has deep roots that go back to the earliest European settlers in Tennessee. Greeneville is one of Tennessee’s most historic towns, and the area played an important role in the early colonial history of the state and region.

The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site is one of the county’s best-known landmarks, preserving the story of the 17th president of the United States. The area also has connections to frontier history, early settlement, and the State of Franklin period.

Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park is also here, with 105 acres located alongside the Nolichucky River near the confluence with Big Limestone Creek. While it sustained catastrophic damage during the historic 2024 Hurricane Helene flooding, renovations and improvements are underway for reopening with an expanded set of features.

Whether its an educational outing to the Greeneville Greene County History Museum, or a drive around the back roads scouting historic structures, echos of the past grace the land and enrich the days.

4. Get Outdoors

It is extremely not-hard to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air here in Greene County. So get outside, take in nature’s glory and stretch your legs. Raft or fish the Nolichucky River, hike a bit of the Appalachian trail, cross another waterfall off your list, go horseback riding on the ridges or take a side-by-side up over the mountain to a swimming hole in Paint Creek.

Head up Meadow Creek Mountain to the rebuilt fire tower and take in 360 view degrees looking out over the rolling hills and farmland on one side, and some of the tallest peaks east of the Mississippi on the other. Gently sloped trails run along the ridge for miles in either direction.

If you’ve come into some acreage here you might just prefer to sit by the creek, stroll thru the woods, work the land, or spend time with your animal friends. Sometimes the best outdoor experience is right out the back door! That’s not hard to find in Greene County.

Greene County still has a strong sense of local identity. People know their neighbors, local businesses matter, and community events bring people together throughout the year. You’re always likely to run into people you know in restaraunts, at Tractor Supply, or a downtown festival.

That small-town feel is a welcome change from larger metros and really boosts quality of life. There is a grounded, familiar quality to life here. People wave driving by, conversations happen in checkout lines, and local connections still count whether they go back generations or are newly built.

It doesn’t take much time to walk around downtown, but we’ve got plenty to do. Historic theaters, local coffee shops, a real hot dog stand, fine dining and a wine bar, the community maker space classes, antique stores and music venues. It’s a great little town.

Greene County is a great place to spread out and breathe deep. Compared to other areas of the counry Greeneville is still incredibly affordable. Just as Greeneville balances rural living with easy access to amenities, real estate prices still feel low compared to much of the country.

Its not overbuilt, but has everything you need – close by in town or a quick drive down the road. Its an easy vibe to slide into and breathe easier. There’s space to carve your own path here.
